The 25% Agent Problem

Bain estimates that agentic commerce could reach 15% to 25% of U.S. ecommerce by 2030, or $300 billion to $500 billion in market value (Bain & Company, “2030 Forecast: How Agentic AI Will Reshape US Retail,” Dec 17 2025). Agentic commerce means an AI agent helps start, influence, or complete the purchase instead of leaving every step to the buyer.

That sounds like ecommerce news.

Fine.

It is not only ecommerce news.

If your customers compare before buying, the same shift matters to you. The buyer is not always going to read six websites, skim your pretty paragraph, and then decide. The assistant may do the first pass. It may compare prices, policies, reviews, delivery, location, expertise, and trust signals before the buyer ever sees your face.

Forbes Business Council published a piece on August 21 arguing that merchants should treat product data as the new storefront and start measuring how assistants recommend them (Forbes Business Council, “AI Agents Could Rewrite E-Commerce-Here’s How Brands Can Prepare,” Aug 21 2026). Microsoft is already describing agentic commerce as AI-led shopping journeys built around accurate product truth, consistent brand voice, and a path to purchase (Microsoft Advertising, “Agentic Commerce,” accessed Aug 23 2026).

Here is the work.

First, make your facts easy to verify. Not slogans. Facts. Pricing, service area, materials, policies, availability, reviews, credentials, delivery times, exclusions. If the useful detail only exists inside a decorative paragraph, you are making the machine dig through fog.

Second, ask the assistant the question your buyer asks. Not your brand name. The category question. Best wedding venue near me. Best roof repair company after storm damage. Best clinic for this problem. Best product for this use case.

Third, write down who gets named, why they get named, and what the answer gets wrong.

That is the part most owners skip.

They wait for traffic to fall, then ask what happened.

Adobe Analytics said traffic from generative AI sources to U.S. retail sites rose 1,200% from July 2024 to February 2025, based on analysis of more than 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail sites (Adobe, “Traffic to U.S. Retail Websites from Generative AI Sources Jumps 1,200 Percent,” Mar 17 2025). Waiting is a strategy. It is just usually the weakest one in the room.

Do this today.

Ask the assistant the buying question.

If you are absent, do not panic.

Just stop pretending the old storefront is the only storefront.
