OpenAI Is Licensing Yelp Data. Local Businesses Should Read Their Reviews Differently.

OpenAI is licensing Yelp data for ChatGPT.

That is not a small local search update if your customers compare you before they call, book, visit, or ask for a quote. A roofing contractor, clinic, venue, attorney, hotel, studio, or repair business is now being judged from more than its own website.

The assistant is learning from the places where customers already describe the business.

Are You Visible gets businesses found, cited, and recommended inside AI answers. I check what ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity say when your customers ask for a business like yours, then I show you where you appear, where you are missing, who is being named instead, and what needs fixing.

What did OpenAI get from Yelp?

OpenAI gets access to Yelp reviews, photos, and business information for ChatGPT answers.

Yelp’s Request a Quote feature is also expected to appear in ChatGPT for local service searches. That changes the path from search, compare, click, form fill into something much shorter: ask, compare, choose.

The important part is not Yelp alone. The important part is the pattern.

AI answers are built from sources the assistant can read, trust, and cite. If a third-party profile has clearer facts, stronger reviews, better photos, and fresher customer language than the website, that profile can shape the recommendation.

A business owner may think the homepage is the source of truth. The assistant may decide Yelp, HomeAdvisor, reviews, maps, and other third-party pages explain the business better.

What should a local business check first?

A local business should check what ChatGPT says before changing anything.

Ask the plain buyer question. Not the brand name. Not internal category language. Ask the thing a customer would ask when they are tired and trying to narrow the list.

Who should I hire for roof repair in Lakeway Austin?

Best wedding venues near Girona for 90 guests.

Which dentist in Austin is good for nervous patients?

Then look at the names, the reasons, and the sources. If the answer names competitors and gives clear reasons for them, those reasons are the evidence the assistant found useful.

That is the part most businesses miss.

The problem is not always that you need more content. Sometimes the problem is that the assistant cannot find enough specific, trusted proof to connect your business to the question being asked.

Check Yelp. Check your reviews. Check your photos. Check your service descriptions. Check whether the same facts appear clearly on your own site.

The shortlist is being built from the evidence available.
