Reddit Is Not An AI Visibility Strategy
Reddit citations in ChatGPT Search fell sharply in August.
The Drum reported that PromptWatch saw Reddit citations fall by more than 86% over a recent four-day period. Reddit had been averaging 3.83% of ChatGPT citations, then fell below 1%.
That matters because Reddit had become the lazy answer to AI visibility.
A brand wanted ChatGPT to mention it. So someone made a thread, planted a question, answered with the brand name, and hoped the assistant would treat the thread as proof.
Fine. It worked until it did not.
Are You Visible is an AI search visibility agency. I get businesses found, cited, and recommended inside AI answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. That work is not about pushing one source until a model notices you. It is about making the business easier to trust when an assistant compares options.
Why is Reddit a weak AI visibility plan?
Reddit is a weak AI visibility plan because a single source can move, shrink, or disappear from the answer.
The Drum also reported that Petra Labs saw Reddit citations on ChatGPT fall about 80%. Other social platforms were down too, including YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
The useful part is not guessing the exact cause.
The useful part is seeing the risk.
When every marketer rushes the same source, the source gets crowded. Communities push back. Platforms tighten. Assistants change what they cite.
The shortcut becomes the thing that stops looking clean.

What does the running shoe screenshot show?
The running shoe screenshot shows why AI visibility is bigger than Reddit.
The buyer is not asking for a brand. The buyer gives a real profile: body size, knee pain, running frequency, and distance. The assistant turns that into a shortlist of running shoes and gives reasons for each one.
Brooks, ASICS, and HOKA appear.
Nike, Adidas, Saucony, New Balance, Mizuno, On Running, Altra, Puma, and Under Armour do not appear in the shown answer.
That is the part most operators miss.
The assistant is not rewarding the loudest brand. It is assembling an answer from product fit, stated features, retailer data, review sites, and third-party language it can use as evidence.
Reddit appears in the detail panel, but it is only one piece of the answer. Running Shoes Guru, Believe in the Run, Doctors of Running, Brooks, ASICS, HOKA, and DICK’S Sporting Goods also matter.
One Reddit comment is not a moat.
What should an owner check instead?
An owner should check whether AI answers can explain why the business deserves to be named.
Open a Temporary Chat in ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity. Memory can affect the answer, so do not test from a normal chat full of your own company history.
Ask the category question a real buyer would ask before buying from you. Not your brand name.
For a running store, that might be which shoes suit a heavier runner with knee pain. For an attorney in Chicago, it might be who to call after a car accident. For a consultant in London, it might be who helps a founder fix a specific operational problem.
Then repeat the check in fresh sessions across several days.
Look at the names, the reasons, and the sources.
If the assistant names a competitor because their reviews, pages, product details, and third-party mentions make the answer easy, that is the work.
Not another planted thread.
