ChatGPT Is Now A Very Large Online Search Engine In The EU

ChatGPT is now a Very Large Online Search Engine in the EU.

That sounds like Brussels paperwork until you run a business people compare before buying. A venue in Paris. A clinic in Berlin. A contractor in Austin with customers who ask an assistant who to trust before they call.

Are You Visible is my AI search visibility agency. I get businesses found, cited and recommended inside AI answers, measured across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

The European Commission designated ChatGPT under the Digital Services Act on August 31, 2026. OpenAI declared that ChatGPT reaches at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU, which is the threshold for the designation.

That is the signal.

ChatGPT is no longer just a chatbot in the corner. In Europe, the regulator is treating it as search infrastructure.

What does ChatGPT’s EU search status mean for your brand?

ChatGPT’s EU search status means AI answers now sit closer to regulated search than novelty software.

That does not mean the answer will send you traffic. It means the answer matters enough that governments are writing rules around it.

A buyer asks where to host a client dinner in Paris. A shortlist comes back. The reasons come from websites, directories, reviews, articles, menus, local pages and whatever else the assistant can understand.

If your business is absent, nobody sends you a report. The conversation just moves on.

What should you check this week?

Use a Temporary Chat and ask the question your customer would actually ask.

Not your brand name first. That is too easy.

Ask for the category, city, use case and constraint. Something like: where should I book a private dinner for 12 clients in Paris near the 8th arrondissement?

Then run the same kind of check in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity over several days. Fresh sessions matter because one lookup is not an audit. It is one lookup.

Write down who gets named, what reason is attached, and which sources appear to support the answer.

That is the beginning of visibility work. Not a theory. A list of answers your buyers may already be seeing.
