AI Search Traffic Drop Is a Warning
Ireland’s main tourism website reportedly lost 21% of its visitors, and AI search is being blamed.
That is not just a tourism story. It is a warning for any business whose customers research, compare, or ask for a recommendation before they buy. Are You Visible is my AI search visibility agency. I help businesses find out whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name, cite and recommend them when buyers ask before they buy.
Why does an AI search traffic drop matter?
An AI search traffic drop matters because the missing visit may still be a buyer. The buyer may have received the answer before reaching the website.
A traveller planning Ireland can ask where to stay in Dublin, what to do near Galway, or which part of the Wild Atlantic Way is worth booking around. The assistant can return a shortlist with reasons attached. Hotels, tours, restaurants and towns can be compared before the traveller opens a browser tab.
If your business is absent from that answer, the loss does not look like a failed conversion. It looks like nothing happened.
What does the Ireland tourism signal show?
The Ireland tourism signal shows that AI search is now part of the traffic conversation for real operators, not just software people.
That does not mean every traffic drop comes from AI. It means the old comfort is gone. A business can no longer assume the buyer will visit the website before forming a shortlist.
The uncomfortable part is simple. Your analytics show visits. They do not show the buyer who asked a Temporary Chat, got a recommendation, trusted the reason, and never came looking for you.
How should you check your own visibility?
Check your own visibility by using a Temporary Chat and asking the kind of question a buyer would ask.
Do not start with your brand name. Start with the category. Ask where to stay in Dublin for a first trip, which wedding venues near Madrid feel private, or who is the best attorney for a car accident in Austin.
Then read the answer like a customer. Who gets named. What reasons are attached. Which sources seem to support the answer. Whether your business appears at all.
Run the same check across several fresh sessions over several days. One answer is noise. Repeated answers start to show the pattern.
The point is not to force the assistant to say your name. The point is to see what happens when the buyer asks in plain English and you are not in the room.
