Google Local Knowledge Panels Are Becoming AI Answers

Google local knowledge panels are becoming AI answers.

Search Engine Roundtable reported a Google test where a local knowledge panel carried an AI Overview label, a Show more button, and an expanded AI-style follow-up interface.

That matters because local search is not staying in the old box.

Are You Visible is an AI search visibility agency for businesses whose customers research, compare, or ask for a recommendation before buying. I get those businesses found when buyers ask AI who to choose.

Why does a Google local knowledge panel matter for AI visibility?

A Google local knowledge panel matters because it is one of the places a buyer sees the business before clicking anything.

For a local service business, this is not abstract.

A homeowner in Phoenix asks Google about an HVAC company. A bride in Chicago checks a wedding venue. A patient compares clinics before booking.

The panel used to be a summary box. Now Google is testing a version that behaves more like an answer.

That is the shift.

The old local search asset is becoming part of the AI search surface.

What should a local business check first?

A local business should check whether Google has enough current, specific, and accurate information to describe the business well.

The boring fields matter now.

Services. Categories. Descriptions. Photos. Reviews. Opening hours. Recent updates. The words customers use when they describe the job they need done.

If Google turns the profile into an AI-style summary, stale information becomes more expensive. It stops being hidden in a business profile and starts shaping the answer.

What does this change for operators?

This changes the job from managing listings to managing visibility inside answers.

The buyer does not care whether the information came from a profile, a review, a page, or a map result. The buyer sees the answer and decides who belongs on the shortlist.

So do the simple check.

Search your business the way a customer would. Then search the category and city without using your business name. Use Temporary Chat when you run the same kind of check in ChatGPT, and use a fresh session when you check other assistants.

Write down who gets named, what reason is attached, and what source appears to support it.

If your business is absent, the first problem is not ranking.

The first problem is knowing what the answer says.
