ChatGPT Is Building Its Own Search Engine
ChatGPT is no longer just borrowing search from somewhere else.
Peec AI reported that ChatGPT has been running its own retrieval index, internally called Labrador, alongside outside sources. That matters because a search index is the memory layer that decides which pages, listings, reviews, products, and sources can even be considered before an answer is written.
Are You Visible is an AI search visibility agency. I get businesses found when their customers ask AI who to trust, where to book, what to buy, or which provider to call.
This is why the old SEO comfort blanket is too thin.
For years, the lazy answer was simple. Rank in Google, make sure Bing can see you, and ChatGPT will probably find you.
That was never enough. Now it is openly the wrong mental model.
Peec AI found ChatGPT using a family of indexes for things like the general web, PDFs, YouTube, news, Wikipedia, local, shopping, finance, legal, medical, and images. It also found ChatGPT still using outside providers, including Google, Microsoft, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and others.
So search is not one doorway anymore. It is a routing system.
A buyer in Chicago asks for the best clinic for a specific treatment. ChatGPT may look at your site, a cached copy of your site, a local listing, a review source, a licensed data partner, or some mix you never see. Then the answer comes back with a shortlist.
If your business is absent there, the loss does not show up as a lower ranking.
It shows up as silence.
The useful move this week is simple. Open a Temporary Chat and ask the question your buyer would ask. Use the real wording, not your brand name. Ask again over several days, because one lookup is not a visibility check.
Then write down who gets named, what reason ChatGPT gives, and which sources it seems to trust.
That is the new definition of search.
Not where you rank.
Whether you are named when the answer gets made.
