Why AI trusts Reddit more than your website
OpenAI and Google both made Reddit harder to ignore.
OpenAI announced a Reddit partnership in 2024 that brings Reddit content into ChatGPT and new products. Google announced an expanded Reddit partnership the same year, including access to Reddit’s Data API for fresher, structured Reddit information.
That does not mean your website is useless.
It means your website is not enough.
Are You Visible is my AI search visibility agency. I get businesses found, cited, and recommended inside AI answers when their customers research, compare, or ask for a recommendation before buying.
The problem is simple. Your website says you are good. Reddit, forums, review pages, local lists, industry articles, and comparison pages tell the assistant whether other people agree.
That is the off-site authority gap.
A roofing contractor in Phoenix can have a clean service page, sharp photos, and five-star testimonials. Then a buyer opens a Temporary Chat and asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity who to call after a storm. If the answer leans on Reddit threads, contractor directories, neighborhood forums, and review sites where that contractor is absent, the shortlist forms somewhere else.
The fix is not stuffing more claims onto the homepage.
The fix is earning the outside evidence an assistant can safely use. That means finding the pages and communities already shaping the answer, seeing which competitors they mention, and building the reasons your business should appear there too.
This is why I do not treat GEO as an on-site SEO checklist. Your site matters. So do the witnesses around it.
Run the check this week. Open a Temporary Chat and ask the way a buyer would ask. Do not search your brand. Ask for the category, the city, the situation, and the reason to choose.
Then look at the sources behind the answer.
If they are all places you do not appear, the issue is not visibility in theory. It is evidence. The assistant has somewhere else to look, and it trusts that place more than your own page.
That is what I fix.
